The Xtracycle FreeRadical conversion kit is one of–if not the–most cost effective ways of building a cargobike. Finding affordable 26″ mountain bikes to use with the FreeRadical is easy.  Older rigid models work best, and luckily these cost less on the used market.

We have an Xtracycle at the shop for anyone who would like to borrow it and try it out.  You don’t have to be in the market for an Xtracycle to borrow ours.  If you’re a downtown resident running an errand that requires more cargo capacity than you bicycle can handle, feel free to use ours to get the job done.  We have the wideloader and longloader attachments, which allow you to carry larger objects than the stock panniers.  Be aware that our Xtracycle is built on a fairly large frame, and I’m afraid riders under 5′9″ might have a hard time straddling the toptube.

We do not presently have FreeRadical kits to ship immediately to out of town customers. We are happy to special order them is you’d like, and they’ll ship to you 3-4 business days after you place the order. If you have the know-how to install the FreeRadical yourself, and your LBS can’t/won’t order them and/or wants an exhorbinant amount of money for them, contact us.  If you’ll have to have a shop install the FreeRadical, I suggest buying it from the shop who will do the work.

We’re in fairly small city, with a metro area of under 200,000 people, so it doesn’t make sense for us to import a container of European cargo bikes. We do have our eye on stocking a small, smart selection of cargobikes and selling them to locals as well as customers in the Southeast US, since there isn’t at present anyone in this region stocking many. Cargobikes are an important part of family cycling culture, allowing parents to carry multiple children on errands that–without a cargobike–would require an automobile.
