To our chagrin, these essential items are found in the “accessories” section of most bicycle catalogs.  We know there’s a place in the world for bicycles that can’t carry anything well and are outfitted for fair weather use only, but they should be the exception rather than the norm.  We like bicycles that work rain or shine, day and night, and can carry a more than a cell phone and spare tube.

The idea bicycles can’t have fenders or bags and remain high performing is one rooted in opinion and bias devoid of any factual basis.  Correctly designed, long fenders actually improve a bicycle’s aerodynamics, and handlebar bags–the optimal way to carry a light load on a road bicycle –present only minor variations in aerodynamic drag when tested in a wind tunnel.

Of course, such concerns are irrelevant to the way most people use their bicycle.  Racks, baskets, bags and fenders make bicycles more useful, practical, and enjoyable.
