Spokes and Nipples
You can purchase spokes for wheelbuilds or a la carte below. If you’re unsure what spokes would be best for you wheels, please call the shop. If you’re ordering wheels from me, you don’t need worry about what spoke length you’ll need, I’ll calculate the correct length for your hubs and rims. If you’re ordering wheels to build yourself, please note what length(s) you need when you order. If you’re unsure what length you need, I can do the calculation for you–just call or e-mail me.
Wheelsmith Spokes
Wheelsmith spokes are my first choice, barely edging out DT Swiss and Sapim. Weights below are for 32 262mm spokes without nipples. I use the DB14 spokes more than any other. Unless you’re trying to shave every last gram (look at the XL14), need wheels for a stout tandem team (look at the DB13), or need disc brake wheels for very aggressive riding (again, DB13′s) the DB14 should be your choice. Prices for Wheelsmith spokes include Wheelsmith brass nipples matched to the spoke color–black with black, silver with silver. If you need silver nipples with black spokes or vice versa, please make a note with your order.
Note, the prices below are for single spokes. If you’re ordering a wheelset you will need the appropriate number of spokes for the hubs and rims you’re using.
- DB14 Silver 172g 2.0/1.7
- DB14 Black 172g 2.0/1.7
- XL14 Silver 137g 2.0/1.5
- DB13 Silver 220g 2.3/2.0
- SS14 Silver 2.0 213g
- SS14 Black 2.0 213g
I will not use XL14 spokes on drive side of rear wheels, if you include these on a wheel you order on the website I’ll contact you. DB 13 spokes are for tandem wheels and require a hub with wide spoke holes and are not compatible with many road hubs.
DT Swiss Competition Black 2.0/1.8 282mm Spokes
I was offered a a large batch of these DT Swiss spokes and scooped them all up because they’re the length needed for lacing almost all high-flange track hubs to Velocity Deep V’s three cross. Price includes a black brass nipple.
Velocity Straight Gauge Black 2.0 Spokes
I offer these for people who want an economical black spoke but whose wheelbuilds cannot utilize the 282mm DT Swiss Competition spokes above. Black Wheelsmith straight guage spokes are pretty expensive relative to silver, so I offer these. If you’d like a silver brass nipple with these black spokes you’ll save a little, or choose the black nipple is you’d like the spoke and nipple to match. The price below is for a single spoke. If you’re ordering a wheelset you will need the appropriate number of spokes for the hubs and rims you’re using.
Velocity Powdercoated Spokes
These stainless steel 2.0 spokes include a silver brass nipple and are powdercoated in the colors below.
Note: Powdercoated spokes’ powdercoat can be chipped or rubbed away during lacing and stress relieving during the wheelbuild. These blemishes are slight at occur at the spoke elbow and at spoke crosses. They are not noticable from a distance, but if you look very closely the blemishes are apparent. Consider yourself warned. Chipping at the spoke elbow will be more noticeable on high quality hubs. High quality hubs have very precise spoke hole drillings for a snug fit, while lower priced hubs have larger holes so that wheels using these hubs can be laced by machines.
Ordering the Correct Spoke Length
If you’re ordering spokes a la carte, please make a note on your order or call/e-mail me to let me know what length you need. If you’re purchasing wheels I’ll calculate the correct length, of course. I can also calculate the correct spoke length for customers who already have rims and/or hubs and need to buy spokes to fit. In many cases I’ll have the rim and hub measurements in one of my databases. If not I’ll need the customer to provide some hub measurements.
Spoke Nipples
All prices above include brass nipples. Brass nipples are easier to work with and are more durable than aluminum nipples. However, I will build with alumimum alloy nipples if you’re trying to make your wheels as light as possible or want colored nipples.
