Panaracer Col de la Vie 650B & 650A

col de la vie 650BThe Col de la Vie have a semi-deep tread that runs along the length of the tire, steel bead, and a casing very similar (if not identical) to that found on the Pasela.  Although labelled 37mm wide, they measure about 35.5mm on most rims.

Some 650B aficionados don’t like the tread of this tire when used on the road, finding it squiggly.  The tread does mean that the tire loses some speed when compared to smoother 650B tires such as the Hetre or Cypres. I don’t have the beef with this tire that some do, and the comparison to the Gran Bois tires costing twice as much is more than a little unfair. There is no doubt the tire would be faster and quieter if it had the tread of the Pasela, but the upside of the tread is that the Col de la Vie handles superbly on dirt.  I’ve used these tires on singletrack and they have quite a bit more bite in the corners than you’d expect from a “street” tire.

We pay significantly more for the 650A version, which is why they cost you significantly more.  If you’re choosing between the Col de la Vie 650A and the 650A Schwalbe Delta Cruiser I’d say the Col is a lighter tire all around and will likely feel more peppy.  I would expect to get more miles and less flats out of the Delta Cruiser, but both tires are long-lasting and the Col de la Vie isn’t particularly flat prone.
