Brooks B17 Saddles

B17 Standard Honey

The B17 is Brooks’ most popular model and has been in production since 1898.   No saddle will ever make everyone happy, but the B17 probably comes closest and is the saddle of choice for staggering numbers of long-distance cyclists.  The  B17 works best on bicycles with handlebars just about even with the saddle.  A little lower or higher is fine, but if your bars are dramatically higher of lower than the seat you’ll likely need another model.

Standard Models have tubular steel rivets and black steels rails.  Champion Special Models have large copper rivets and copper plated rails and a skivved skirt.  Titanium Models are identical to the Champion Special but with titanium rails, dramatically reducing the weight (and increasing the price).

What’s the difference between the different B17 Models?

The Standard models have black rails and small steel rivets.  The B17 Standard S ladies model is identical to the non-S except that it has a shorter nose to facillitate riding in a skirt or dress.  If you’re a woman and will never ride in a skirt of dress, the S model won’t be of any functional benefit.  The Special and Titanium models both have hand pounded, large copper rivets and a chamfered edge on the saddle skirt.  The Special has copper plated steel rails and the titanium has–you guessed it–titanium rails, which greatly reduce the weight of the saddle (and increase the price!).

My bars are quite a bit lower (or higher) than my saddle, what other Brooks models should I consider?

If your bars are a little too low for a B17 to work for you, look at the Team Pro or B17 Narrow, which are slightly narrow than the B17.  If you are using upright bars, consider the B67 or B68, which are wider to support more upright riding positions.
