Designed for use with toe clips, these pedals offer a flat, solid platform to offer good foot support and reduce the chance of hotspots.  I don’t use toe clips and I can’t say that I’ve taken these on a long ride, just on test rides for bikes that I’ve built up.  But enough people whose opinion I value rave about the pedals to keep them in the store.
