I’m a bicycle mechanic who isn’t very fond of working on my own bicycles. I work on bicycles plenty enough as is and look for parts that can be installed, used, and almost forgotten from a maintenance standpoint. As a mechanic I see the not so pretty consequences of the industry’s quest for “the latest and greatest.” I appreciate innovation, but am very wary of the unintended consequences of “improving” component designs that have worked for decades.

I stock what I like, and won’t put anything in the webstore that is too fussy, ugly, or ostentatious to put on one of my own bicycles. I prefer components that don’t use proprietary this-or-that so that changing one component necessitates a cascade of changes. I look for components that can be used everyday for many years with zero to minimal maintenance. And I look for components that don’t just look good today but will look good in fifty years.
