We’re a small bicycle business in Troy, New Hampshire. Our focus is on fine bicycles and parts for practical cyclists, real-world road bicycles, custom wheelbuilding, and family cycling. I (Anthony) presently perform all the day to day duties at Longleaf Bicycles.  If you e-mail us, I’ll respond. After working in several mainstream bicycle shops I found that people who rode bicycles for their intended use were ill-served. Shop employees were rarely aware of the best products for practical cycling, the technical knowledge of the average employee was shockingly low, and the shops even more rarely stocked the best products for said use–instead stocking those most heavily marketed and relying on brand recongnition rather than quality.  I also found that within the industry’s golden child category–road bicycles–riders were usually sold bicycles poorly designed for the type of road riding the rider was actually going to do.  Most people don’t race, still fewer race at elite levels (and those who do don’t buy their own bicycles), and the best road bicycle for rides averaging 18-21 mph (which encompasses 99% of all “roadies”) isn’t the same bicycle best for elite level road racing, no matter how many glossy ads attempt to persuade otherwise.

Our emphases at Longleaf Bicycles are as follow:

• Transportation Cycling for individuals and families.  The right bicycle for your transportation needs will depend on the length of your average trip, the topography of your local area, and the amount of cargo (including children) you need to carry on your bicycle. I have used my bicycle as primary transportation for years, both in sprawling suburban metro areas and dense, urban areas.  I presently ride with my toddler everyday, and will be riding with our second child in a few weeks.  We have experience using cargobikes, seats, and trailers to carry children, groceries, etc. on our bicycles.
• Real-World Road Bicycles. A well executed road bicycle is magnificent machine, but most road bicycles are severely limited by liabilities resulting from design and marketing pratices obsessively focused on bicycles used in elite, competitive road racing. I take seriously my responsibility to sift through the stultifying amount of misinformation and myth concerning road bike performance and help customers choose the right bicycle and parts.
• Dynamo-Powered Lighting Systems.  For both types of cycling above, dynohub powered LED lighting systems are one of the greatest technological advances of the last few decades.  That these parts remain niche products is a testament to the obsessive focus on racing discussed above. I do not know of a single person who has installed a quality dynamo hub lighting system on their bicycle, been dissatisfied, and gone back to battery lights. Dynamo lighting systems improve any bicycle that is used at night.
• Custom Wheelbuilding.  I offer handbuilt wheels made to order for those who either require the durability that only traditional handbuilt wheels afford or need wheels built in a configuration unavailable in stock production offerings.  All wheels built by me with approved components are covered by a lifetime warranty.
